COURSE PROGRAM: EFFECTIVE Filipino LEADERSHIP
Effective Leadership as Mover of Change among Filipino communities by Betsy von Atzigen
” Filipino leaders equipped with effective tools and attitude adapted to the ‘pinoy’
character, culture and mindset and suited to the demands of leadership in Europe
possess the power to build, strengthen and sustain a dynamic, rewarding community.”
– Betsy von Atzigen, ENFiD Chair
A. Why answer the Call to effective Filipino Leadership Program?
What’s in it for me?
1. You’ll gain confidence.
Filipino community/ ENFiD leaders are chosen or voted into positions by fellow kababayans.
Having your abilities recognised by others is empowering, and the work you do in a
leadership role is likely to be recognised.
2. You’ll learn to set a vision, a goal.
“A ship’s captain who does not have a clear destination or objective in mind lacks the
credibility and authority to inspire, motivate, and empower his crew whose task it is to stay
the course. Without his crew’s investment in their cause and trust in his leadership, it is
unlikely that they will have the fortitude to brave the dangerous storms at sea, and they will
likely perish.” Likewise, ENFiD as an organization, as a community without a vision will
inevitably waste its resources, have no clear direction, and most likely dissolve when
members depart.
3. You can develop communication skills.
Public speaking plays a major role in community building today, either in Tagalog, English or
language of your host country. As a leader, you’ll have to speak with confidence and poise to
diverse groups about ENFiD’s mission and goals. Diplomacy skills and persuasion tactics are
applicable to community work both verbally and in writing. You can develop your
communication skills by speaking at events or mentoring incoming leaders, by writing plans
and sending on-time responses to communications.
4. You’ll gain clear insight into Filipino traits and mindset that make or break leaders.
Filipino/ENFiD Community leaders are a breed of our own. Begin by identifying Filipino traits
that build up, strengthen the person/leader versus those that tear apart. Explore the
historical, cultural character of Filipino leaders that serve as role models or the opposite.
Engage the profitable mindset, overcome the treacherous habits.
5. You’ll learn to pick good habits from host country leader models and combine with
Filipino leader’s best.
Look around you. Observe those that walk and talk good leadership habits within our host
country. You have the familiar advantage of combining the finest Filipino leadership model
with commendable European traits that could build the ideal leader one could become.
Examine the cultural perspective and impact of punctuality, courtesy, respect, openness,
professionalism, diligence, hard work, right motivation, honesty and integrity.

6. You can hone problem-solving abilities, develop negotiation and management skills.
Our Filipino communities work on collaborative projects that may have competing interests.
Leaders must learn to establish priorities and compromise when necessary. Success occurs
when the integrity of a project is maintained and everyone involved feels valued and
empowered. This form of negotiation is invaluable for helping any group meet its goals,
including professional teams in the workforce.
A strong leader is one whose management skills become second nature. Leaders must
oversee operational tasks, make budgets, prioritize workloads, build consensus and perform
other executive duties as necessary. You’ll likely make mistakes, but learning how to handle
them now can better prepare you for bigger challenges.
