History

The European Network of Filipino Diaspora (ENFiD) is an active international networking association that seeks to cultivate a sense of shared nationhood and cooperation among Overseas Filipinos in Europe. ENFiD is presently represented by correspondent Filcom Affiliates in twenty countries and is active in organising cultural events, relief operations, focused training workshops, fora for the discussion of issues pertinent to Euro-Filipinos and partnering with institutions for greater access to migration issues on culture and development.

2015

ENFiD was represented at the Manila 3rd Global Summit of Filipinos in Diaspora. ENFiD has mobilised to organise its 2nd European Regional Overseas Filipino Conference, an event aimed to further promote the thriving of overseas Filipinos especially in Europe’s multicultural environment. This was made possible partly through newly-struck partnerships with the Commission on Filipinos Overseas and the PhilAm Life Foundation. ENFiD was also joined by it’s newest member ENFiD-Ireland

 

2013-2014

2013 continued with the formation of more national affiliates such as ENFiD-Malta, ENFiD-Iceland, and ENFiD-Romania. ENFiD crafted its constitution and bylaws at the meeting in Malta of the ad hoc representatives what eventually constituted the first set of Board of Directors that sent a delegation to the 2nd Global Summit of Filipinos in the Diaspora in Manila on February. By this time, the affiliate organisations have also began mobilising cultural and relief projects in their respective countries. Fibre Filippine was held in Rome and Milan 2013 and 2014 under the ENFiD aegis to keep alive Filipino culture among
the Filipinos overseas and inject it as an aspect in their adopted country. An International Day of Thanksgiving across Europe for the overwhelming response of Europe to victims of typhoon Haiyan

ENFiD participated in IFAD Conference on Remittance Development 2013 and 2014 in Bangkok, Migration Trends Conference by IOM and Italian Foreign Ministry in 2014 held in Rome, Migration Conference in Stockholm, PinoyWise Conference in Kuwait, and the Middle East Diaspora Summit in Doha.

ENFiD became a fully-registered, legally-recognised entity under the laws of the Republic of Malta on 31 January 2014. It held its first Annual General Assembly from 11-13 July in Madrid, Spain where new Board Members were elected at the assembly. By the new set of Board of Directors met in Paris to adopt a Five-Year Strategy Plan and agreed to set up a permanent secretariat. The number of countries where ENFiD was represented had swelled to seventeen.

In late 2014 ENFiD collaborated with Commission on Filipinos Overseas in hosting the Ugnayan Project, a series of road trips across Europe to network with Filipino associations and groups in Europe held in Iceland, Denmark, Italy, Norway.

Important dates:

January 11. ENFiD-Germany was established and Oggie Maristela was elected.

Identified the official country representatives among the adhoc country reps who were able to do a D2D echo and ENFiD country representative election. Creation of Board of Directors from the official country representatives. Drafted the ENFiD Constitution and By-laws.

March 3. 1st D2D echo and birthing of ENFiD-Malta.

February 25-27. Global Summit in Philippines. ENFiD delegates attended. Re-enfranchisement of overseas voters.

2012

As the year proceeded, the representatives went on to form corresponding ENFiD affiliates in their own countries such as ENFiD-UK and ENFiD-Netherlands which were formed later that year. D2D echoes across Italy, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Germany and other European countries were held in fulfillment of the Rome Declaration giving birth to respective ENFiDs.

On December 8, 2012, ENFiD also launched ENFiD Bayanihan para sa Biktima ni Pablo, a relief drive for the victims of Typhoon Pablo in the southern regions of the Philippines.

Important dates:

September 27-29. Dialogue to Diaspora (D2D) was held in Rome, Italy.

September 29. Rome Commitment was created and agreed by all D2D Participants. European Network of Filipino Diaspora was born. 14 country representatives were selected among the attendees to be part of the adhoc committee to prepare for the Global Summit on February 2013.

ENFiD logo was established

ENFiD-UK was born and 3 ENFiD-UK representatives: Gene Alcantara, Zenaida Espinas, and Adelina Duenas were elected.ENFiD-UK also selected their Board of Advisers.

ENFiD-Netherlands was born and Rohlee de Guzman was elected.

December 8. Launched ENFiD Bayanihan para sa Biktima ni Pablo. A drive to help the victims of typhoon Pablo in the southern part of the Philippines.

D2D echoes were held in Italy, Czech Republic, Denmark, Germany and other European countries.

2010

The 2010 First Global Summit in Manila fostered talks to convene Filipinos across Europe led by Fil-Italy members of the Global Filipino Diaspora Council. The talks ultimately materialised in September 27 to 29, 2012 when the European regional conference of overseas Filipinos was convened in Rome by the Fil-Italian community by an all-volunteer staff and hosted by the Philippine Embassy. For the first time Europe was host to Filipinos from the Middle East, Asia and North America. Using the flagship program of the Commission on Filipinos Overseas, Diaspora to Dialogue (D2D), as its main thrust, the “Rome Declaration” was formulated laying the foundation for fourteen attendees to officially establish ENFiD representing their respective countries in the new organization’s ad-hoc committee.

PRE-ENFiD

In 1991 the Amsterdam-based Commission on Filipino Migrant Workers (CFMW) with satellite offices in Barcelona, Athens, London and Madrid, organized the first conference of Filipino Migrants in Europe held in Kerkrade, The Netherlands, attended by 180 Filipinos from all over Europe. Several sector conferences ensued, among them the 1992 Women Conference that gave birth to Babaylan, the Filipino Women Network in Europe.
